Cutting the Dull Bits

Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.
— Alfred Hitchcock

Which is the common denominator of the most memorable scenes from theatre or cinema? What keeps us nailed on the couch craving for what will happen next? Whether they are Romeo and Juliet confessing their love in the balcony scene, Hamlet facing his father's ghost or Luke Skywalker trying to destroy the Death Star they are trying to pursue happyness and to escape death at same time. In other words: conflicts are what we want to see in a scene. And conflicts are the essence of Drama, If improvisors ignore Dramathurgy they will be chained to jokes or arguments. But Dramathurgy is not the hero's journey, the story's arc or basic plots, it is about conflicts. In this workshop improvisors will learn how to recognize the conflicts in the scene and to play them to their maximum, pushing their characters into that narrow line were they will be fleeing from Death and at the same time looking for Happiness. Only in this way we can keep the attention of the audience awake and create vivid and enthralling stories.
